Inside linebackers

The 10th in a series looking at each of the Dallas Cowboys' position groups:

Players: Bradie James (signed through 2011), Keith Brooking (signed through 2011), Bobby Carpenter (signed through 2010), Jason Williams (signed through 2012), Stephen Hodge (signed through 2012)

What went right: Keith Brooking couldn’t have been a much better fit as a relatively low-priced free agent. He was the most productive ILB partner Bradie James has had and almost immediately became an inspirational leader.

There were questions about how much gas was left in Brooking’s tank after 11 seasons in Atlanta, but he proved that he could still play at a high level in Wade Phillips’ scheme. According to the coaches’ film, Brooking had 156 tackles, four sacks and eight passes defensed.

James, a defensive captain who consistently preaches accountability, had another solid season with a team-high 181 tackles, including five for losses. His sack total dropped from eight in 2008 to two this season, but that’s in part because Brooking blitzed more often than Zach Thomas had.

Former first-round pick Bobby Carpenter continues to be a punching bag for fans, but he at least made a significant contribution to the defense as a nickel/dime linebacker. There wasn’t a drop-off from Kevin Burnett, who filled that role before signing with the San Diego Chargers in free agency, to Carpenter.

What went wrong: The two rookies didn’t make any contribution, in large part due to injuries.

Fifth-round pick Stephen Hodge had to undergo knee surgery before the season and was placed on injured reserve. Hodge, who played safety at TCU, didn’t get enough reps during offseason workouts or training camp to make much of an impression due to the knee injury.

Third-round pick Jason Williams, the first player selected by the Cowboys in the 2009 draft, missed the first three games with a high ankle sprain and didn’t make an impact after he got healthy. He spent most of the season on the inactive list.

It was disappointing that Williams, a phenomenal athlete, failed to become a core special teams player. Coaches credited him with only two tackles on special teams.

The Cowboys knew that Williams would be a project when they drafted him, but he often looked lost during training camp. He has the talent to eventually be a starter, but he has a long way to go mentally to be prepared for a significant role.

What’s next: The Cowboys do not have a major need at inside linebacker. If they draft a player at this position, it’s because they think it’s a great value pick.

The starters are set for next season. There could be some competition for the nickel/dime role, but the young players would have to make a lot of progress to challenge Carpenter.

The Cowboys drafted a field goal kicker in 2007 when Nick Folk was selected in the sixth-round from Arizona. He reached the Pro Bowl in his rookie year but after that he lost all sorts of confidence.

He missed a NFL-high 10 kicks in 2009, and the Cowboys had to rid themselves of him.

Now, the team is looking for a kicker again.

David Buehler was drafted last season to be a kickoff specialists/cover man on special teams.

When Folk went though his issues, Buehler wasn't an option. He couldn't make a kick from anywhere. Part of it, Buehler said, was he doesn't practice it enough and his timing was off.

As the Cowboys prepare for the 2010 draft, selecting a kicker might be an option.

The top three kickers in the draft are Michigan State's Brett Swenson, Alabama's Leigh Tiffin and Texas' Hunter Lawrence. We're not saying these three men will be around the second or third day of the draft, but the Cowboys have to look at this position again.

Currently, Connor Hughes (futures roster) and Buehler (active roster) will compete for the field goal job when all the minicamps start this spring. But the Cowboys should add another kicker to the mix.

Each Wednesday leading up to the NFL draft (April 22-24), the ESPN.com blog network will take a division-by-division look at key aspects of the draft. Today’s topic: biggest team needs.

Dallas Cowboys

I had a chance to visit with owner Jerry Jones on ESPN 103.3 in Dallas-Fort Worth on Tuesday and he made it pretty clear that he's not feeling pressure to fill any certain positions. In some ways, the Cowboys will be rolling out two draft classes in 2010. The '09 class was taken out by a wide variety of injuries, so Jones is anxious to see how some of those players respond. Jones didn't confirm this, but I've been told that the scouting department is taking a long look at the safety position with the No. 27 pick overall. The organization is disappointed in the play of Ken Hamlin and it's time to start looking for his eventual replacement. Alan Ball has looked good at times, but I'm not sure he's ready for full-time duty. The Cowboys also would like to add depth along the offensive line. Doug Free emerged as a solid contributor in '09, but the team needs to continue drafting and developing young linemen. I'm not sure where the Cowboys will find a place-kicker, but it's certainly a major need. In fact, it's probably their biggest need heading into the 2010 season.

New York Giants

The Giants have to figure out what went wrong on defense and start adding talent. Linebacker Clint Sintim is a player from the '09 draft who's expected to take a major step this offseason. And there's also speculation that the Giants could go after Karlos Dansby in free agency. The Cardinals linebacker would give the Giants much-needed speed and power. You also have a major need at safety. The Giants were burned when Kenny Phillips went down with a season-ending knee injury after Week 2. C.C. Brown flamed out as Phillips' replacement and Aaron Rouse wasn't a lot better. You cannot enter the '10 season on a wing and a prayer that Phillips will stay healthy. The Giants will have plenty of options at No. 15. I wouldn't rule out a linebacker with that pick. But if a talented offensive tackle is available, general manager Jerry Reese will be ready to pull the trigger.

Philadelphia Eagles

The back end of this defense needs help immediately. You can't just depend on Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown to get you through another season at cornerback. With that No. 24 pick, the Eagles should look long and hard at another cornerback. And obviously safety is a position of need. Quintin Mikell can't line up next to Macho Harris or Quintin Demps next season. The lack of a reliable safety really put the Eagles in a tough spot against teams with elite tight ends such as the Chargers and Cowboys. The Eagles also need to be on the lookout for another pressure player on defense. Trent Cole is one of the top defensive ends in the league, but he needs some consistent help. Defensive tackle is another need. I thought Brodrick Bunkley and Mike Patterson looked tired late in the season. The Eagles can't afford for that to happen again. On offense, you have to figure out the Stacy Andrews situation. If you think Nick Cole can be a long-term answer at right guard, you have to think about releasing Andrews and his big salary.

Washington Redskins

If defensive coordinator Jim Haslett is going to make the transition to the 3-4 scheme, the Skins will have a different mindset in this draft. London Fletcher's a great player, but he wasn't made for the 3-4. It just won't work. The Skins will start looking for big thumpers at inside linebacker and excellent pass-rushers on the outside. Brian Orakpo should make a seamless transition to the new scheme, but I'm not so sure about Andre Carter. The Redskins also need to think about drafting cornerbacks and safeties. The back end of this defense needs to show major improvement. But obviously, all the talk will be about the quarterback position. I think Jason Campbell is a legitimate starter in this league, but Mike Shanahan has to go with the guy he's most comfortable with. That's why I think the Skins likely will stay at No. 4 and pick Sam Bradford. Then the Redskins have to start building an offensive line. The offensive line has suffered from years of draft neglect. It's time to start investing in the trenches.

The goal for the 2010 season is to fix the field goal kicker. The Cowboys hired Chris Boniol as a kicking consultant to work with David Buehler.

But Tony Romo won't hold for Buehler or whomever wins the kicking job in 2010.

Romo took over the holder's spot when then-kicker Nick Folk complained about the placements of punter Mat McBriar.

Romo doesn't like to hold, especially after he botched one in a playoff loss to Seattle in the 2006 season.

Romo had no problems holding for Folk last year, but it's now clear the Cowboys will look elsewhere for a holder.

"Tony did a nice job when he came in,” special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis said Tuesday. “We want to get that situation handled as much as possible. We like for [Romo] not to be the holder.”

So who could be the holder?

* Patrick Crayton, former college quarterback.

* Jon Kitna, who has never done it before but is the backup quarterback.

* McBriar, who did it last year.

Defensive line

Players: NT Jay Ratliff (signed through 2012), DE Marcus Spears (restricted free agent), DE Igor Olshansky (signed through 2012), DE Stephen Bowen (restricted free agent), DE Jason Hatcher (restricted free agent), NT Junior Siavii (restricted free agent)

What went right: Ratliff proved that his Pro Bowl campaign in 2008 was no fluke, earning a spot on the All-Pro team in his second full season as a starter.

Ratliff has established himself as one of the most disruptive interior linemen in the NFL. He's the rare 3-4 nose tackle that is also a force in the nickel and dime packages. His quickness and motor allow him to make plays that are well out of the range of most nose tackles, as evidenced by his seven sacks, 33 quarterback pressures, eight tackles for losses and four fumble recoveries.

Spears and Olshansky aren't part of the substitution packages, but they were major parts of the NFL's fourth-ranked rushing defense.

Olshansky, in particular, was dominant against the run. Coaches credited him with 76 tackles, which is a lot for a defensive end in a 3-4 scheme. Olshansky, one of the NFL's strongest men, also made the inside linebackers' jobs a lot easier by consistently controlling the offensive linemen in front of him.

Olshansky and Stephen Bowen combined to more than make up for the free agency loss of Chris Canty at a fraction of the price the Giants paid the ex-Cowboy. Bowen proved that he can be an effective interior pass rusher in the nickel and dime packages. He only had three sacks, but his 35 quarterback pressures ranked third on the team behind DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer.

What went wrong: Not much, really.

If you want to nitpick, you could point out that Hatcher made a minimal impact. Hatcher underwent knee surgery during the offseason and wasnt 100 percent for most of the season. He didnt get much playing time, but thats partly because the other defensive ends did their jobs well.

What's next: All the restricted free agents should return, although none are likely to get long-term deals before next season.

Bowen's goal during the offseason and training camp should be to prove that he can be an every-down player. At some point, the Cowboys might have to decide between keeping the undrafted Bowen or former first-rounder Spears, but that's down the road.

Siavii did a decent job at backup nose tackle, but the Cowboys could give him some competition with a draft pick.

Watch for Marcus Dixon, who spent the last two seasons on the practice squad, to push for a roster spot.

The film doesn’t lie, but NFL scouts and general managers want to know more.

That’s the purpose of the NFL scouting combine, which is held this week in Indianapolis. Scouts get a chance to see and hear things they couldn’t pick up from poring over watching every play of a prospect’s college career.

The Cowboys don’t have a need so glaring that they’ll have to reach in the early rounds, but there are three position groups their scouting contingent will pay particularly close attention to: safety, offensive guard and offensive tackle.

Here’s a look at how this week’s workouts and interviews could affect the Cowboys’ decisions in the April draft:

Safety: Texas’ Earl Thomas, who set a school record with eight interceptions as a redshirt sophomore last season, would be a good fit for a franchise searching for playmaking ability at safety.

However, Thomas can be found in the middle of the first round in most mock drafts. Unless the Cowboys are willing to trade up from No. 27, they’d need Thomas to have a flaw or two exposed at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Thomas’ size (5-10, 197) is already considered a concern. It would become more of one if his bench rep total is well below average.

Thomas’ coverage ability is his biggest strength, with some believing that he’s good enough to cover NFL slot receivers. He would likely have to be a tick slow in the 40 and/or the shuttle and three-cone drills to still be available when the Cowboys come on the clock.

USC’s Taylor Mays is a physical specimen who was projected as a top-five pick before his senior season, but his stock has steadily gone down. He’s now projected to go in the bottom third of the first round.

The concerns with Mays will sound familiar to Cowboys fans who watched Roy Williams: He’s a big hitter at his best close to the line of scrimmage and can be a liability in coverage.

At 6-3, 231 pounds with blazing speed, Mays is the type of player whose stock could soar after his combine workouts. If that’s the case, it might benefit the Cowboys by pushing Thomas toward the bottom of the first round.

Tennessee’s Eric Berry is the only other safety projected as a first-round pick, and he’ll be gone midway through the round. South Florida’s Nate Allen tops the list of second-round safety possibilities.

Offensive guard: It’d be tough for the Cowboys to pass on Idaho’s Mike Iupati if he’s available. He might have pushed himself into the middle of the first round with a phenomenal week at the Senior Bowl.

If his stock takes a dip, it would likely be because of medical evaluations or interview. He’s a chiseled 6-5, 325-pounder that should impress during workouts.

Doctors will poke and prod the shoulder that required surgery before the 2008 season. Teams will also test his football knowledge and intelligence during interviews. He’s a native of American Samoa who did not begin speaking English or playing football until he moved to California in high school. He went to Idaho because prominent programs passed on him due to academic concerns.

Iupati is the only guard expected to go in the first round.

Massachusetts’ Vladimir Ducasse, who played tackle in college, is an interesting second-round prospect. Like Iupati, Ducasse didn’t play football until moving to America in high school, although the Haitian native was a good student. There are questions about Ducasse’s technique. His performances in the quickness tests could help him rise to the top of the second round.

Illinois’ Jon Asamoah and Alabama’s Mike Johnson are other guards the Cowboys could consider before the draft’s final day.

Offensive tackle: There will be at least a few offensive tackles off the board by the time the Cowboys get on the clock. Maryland’s Bruce Campbell is one who is projected to go somewhere in the neighborhood of No. 27.

The 6-7, 310-pound Campbell is a freakish athlete who should do well in workouts. Once again, the concerns with him will be addressed during medical evaluations and interviews.

Campbell missed three games last season with a sprained MCL and turf toe. He made only 17 career starts before declaring for the draft after his junior season. There are questions about his durability and football savvy. He’s also a work in progress as a run blocker, but the Cowboys can afford to be patient with Doug Free backing up Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo. They just can’t afford another early-round offensive line bust.

USC’s Charles Brown will surely remind Cowboys scouts of one of their worst busts, ex-Trojan tackle Jacob Rogers, who never played a down in Dallas despite being a second-round pick. Like Rogers, Brown is a relatively lean tackle (6-5, 292) who relies more on athleticism than muscle.

Brown, a converted tight end, would improve his stock with a respectable showing on the bench press. He’d still probably need a year or two of seasoning before being ready to start in the NFL, but the Cowboys are drafting for the future instead of filling an immediate need at tackle.

Specialists

The last in a series looking at each Cowboys position group:

Players: P Mat McBriar (signed through 2011), K David Buehler (signed through 2012), LS L.P. Ladouceur (signed through 2012), K Shaun Suisham (restricted free agent),

What went right: The Cowboys dominated the field position battle on a consistent basis due to the kicking game.

Buehler proved that a fifth-round pick on a kickoff specialist can be a wise investment. He consistently boomed kickoffs into the end zone, with a league-high 29 touchbacks. The opponents’ average field position after kickoffs was inside the 23-yard line, which ranked second in the league and was an improvement of more than 6 yards from 2008.

McBriar was the only punter in the league to pin opponents inside the 20 more than half the time, doing so on 38 of his 72 punts with only three touchbacks. He ranked among the NFL’s top 10 in punting average (45.1) and net average (39.9).

What went wrong: Field goals were a season-long adventure.

The Cowboys were basically forced to cut Nick Folk after a span in which he missed seven of 11 attempts. His final kick as a Cowboy was a 24-yard attempt that clanked off the upright in New Orleans, leaving the door open for a Saints comeback.

Suisham, who missed two field goals in the playoff loss to the Minnesota Vikings, was better but didn’t solve the problem.

McBriar took some of the blame as the holder, resulting in Tony Romo taking over those duties, but it became clear that the kicker was the problem.

What’s next: The Cowboys told Buehler, who has a strong but erratic leg, to focus on field goals this offseason. He’ll compete with Connor Hughes, one of the kickers the Cowboys brought in for a workout after cutting Folk, for the field goals job.

The Cowboys would prefer not to use another draft pick on a kicker after selecting one in two of the last three years. They’ve hired ex-Cowboy Chris Boniol as a kicking consultant to work with Buehler and Hughes.

Now that the business day is coming near a close, the next big deadline in this contract stuff is March 4.

That's the deadline for submission of qualifying offers by clubs to their restricted free agents whose contracts expired and to whom that club wants to retain right of first refusal/compensation.

What does this mean to the Cowboys?

They have 13 restricted free agents, including the Big Five in my opinion, Miles Austin, Marcus Spears, Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen and Gerald Sensabaugh. Cowboys have to decide how to tender each player.

We suspect, Austin and Spears would get first-and-third round tenders. Bowen and Sensabaugh a first round tender and Hatcher a second rounder.

Also, March 5 is another big day, if the league and the union can't come to terms on a new contract, the 2010 season become uncapped. Free agency and trades also starts that day.

另外,拿到franchise tag的球员有Green Bay DT Ryan Pickett, New England DT Vince Wilfork, Oakland DE Richard Seymour, who given a exclusive rights franchise tag, Pittsburgh K Jeff Reed, San Francisco DT Aubrayo Franklin and Seattle K Olindo Mare

INDIANAPOLIS -- Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams, who is guaranteed $12.9 million in bonuses and base salary this year, will have to compete to keep his starting job.
"We are going to play the best player, no matter what," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said when asked whether Patrick Crayton or Kevin Ogletree could beat out Williams.

Williams has been a disappointment since the Cowboys traded first-, third- and sixth-round picks to the Detroit Lions for the receiver and a seventh-rounder in the middle of the 2008 season. He has 57 catches for 794 yards and eight touchdowns in 25 games with the Cowboys.
Crayton had more yards and only one fewer catch than Williams last season despite serving as the team's third receiver in the final 10 games. Toward the end of the season, undrafted rookie Ogletree got some playing time in two-receiver sets at Williams' expense.
Phillips has said it's up to the coaching staff to figure out how to best use Williams, who signed a five-year, $45 million extension the week after being traded to Dallas. Phillips reiterated Friday that he believes Williams can perform at a Pro Bowl level, as he did when he caught 82 passes for 1,310 yards for Detroit in 2006.
"I think a guy that has been a Pro Bowler like Roy, he's got to take part of it too," Phillips said. "Miles [Austin] has come so far that nobody knew he was going to be that good. He has to maintain being that good, and Roy has to get to that level again."
