Romo led a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter capped by a touchdown pass toDeMarco Murray while fighting through a back injury that could put his playing status in question going forward, but Witten is still hopeful Romo won’t be lost for the season. He said right now, though, all he can do is wait and see. “A lot of times you lose sight of that, of what Tony’s all about, the toughness that he shows day in and day out, not only mentally but physically,” Witten said. “Just commend him for how he approaches it, and he’s resilient to find a way. He’s so good in those situations.” Both Romo and Witten have been in situations before where everyone had written them off early. Romo played through a fractured rib and a punctured lung in 2011. As recent as last year, Witten came back earlier than expected with a spleen injury that many expected would hold him out of the opener and perhaps longer. Witten said every situation’s different, so it’s impossible to compare Romo’s past rib injuries to his current back injury, but he knows his quarterback will be on the field if it’s at all possible. “You’ve got great trainers and doctors who will evaluate it and figure it out,” Witten said. “This is everything you play for. He’s one of those guys. He’ll do everything he can, for sure.” Romo came into the game with back pain, but he further aggravated the injury while rolling to his left on a third down conversion to Miles Austin. Despite the pain, Romo led the Cowboys on a nine-play, 87-yard drive to beat the Redskins. Witten said he didn’t notice anything on that drive that would suggest the quarterback’s season could be coming to an end. “I saw him limping around after the first couple plays, but I didn’t realize he was that injured, obviously,” Witten said. “It’s a testament to how he plays and what kind of competitor he is.” Witten was just as complimentary about Romo after the game Sunday as he was when fielding questions about his quarterback’s health Monday afternoon. Immediately after the win, Witten said Romo would be a big part of why the team will have success against the Eagles. “He’s amazing, he fights, he’s got unbelievable will, he’s determined,” Witten said. “Obviously, over the last three or four years, in my opinion, I’ve said all along, he’s an elite quarterback, but he’s always been criticized.
